I cannot think about the South without visions of Magnolias. I was blessed with a huge 100 year old magnolia on the property that I rented before buying the farm. Magnolias are perfect for this part of the country. They like our sandy soil and are resistant to most diseases. It is one of the most beautiful shade trees you can plant in your yard.
I was able to get a free magnolia from the Arbor Day Foundation, and eagerly planted it in my yard. It did well initially, but if I forget to water for even a day, it wilts like crazy. It is going to take a long time to develop a good root system.
